You lost me at "I will need a computer"
Nov. 7th, 2005 08:55 amI love my job. Well I think i do. I have found myself having to tell myself this often lately.
Being the only geek amongst scientists leaves me out on the fringes of office conversation.
Friday night after drinks we went to the local pub to fairwell sombody who had been here for about 15 years. I sat down at the table and asked one of the staff who had been on a postgrad course this year how the course went and if she was coming back to work for us full time now. I was actually trying to find out what the course was all about etc. But her response was "Oh yes I will be back.. so im going to need my email set up and a computer and printers configrueed on it and..."
I'm never Just another staff memebr at the company. Because I am THE computer guy people ALWAYS ask computer questions. And its usually the boring ones like "How do I protect my comptuer from viruses, are these worm thingies as dangerous as they say they are and how do they work, and "can you set my computer up next week to do X"
Thats one reason i miss workign with other geeks. Sure the conversations tend to be very geeky.. But they are INTERESTING geekey. " Look at my shiny laptop.. My shiny laptop is bigger than yours.. oh hang on no its not.. damn", "Look at my PDA! its so small its kewel!" and "did you see the new BlueTooth toy I brought my girlfriend!?"
Being the only geek amongst scientists also means that only one other person here understands Computer LAN Games, Role Playing Dungeons and Dragons or any other D20 derivitive.
AHHHHHK!!!!
I need a new RPG posse my old one never meets any more!
